Abstract

|
|
Pulmonary complications occur frequently after abdominal surgery, and in spite of advances in anesthetic and surgical technique, and the advent of chemotherapeutic agents, it would appear that these complications remain a major problem. Location
of
the
surgical incision and age of the patients were improtant factors in determining the development of postoperative pulmonary complications. Especially, past studies suggested that the patients having upper abdominal surgery were at very high risk
for
pulmonary complications. Routine preoperative pulmonary function test in these patients was recommended to identify factor at greatest risk so that they could receive specialized periopoerative care. Pulmonary function studies can be utilized
successfully for diagnosis of pulmonary problems in surgical patients preoperatively. Extension of those specialized perioperative care to large numbers of poor risk patients according to pulmomary function studies should reduce postoperative
morbidity
and mortality, allow earlier discharge, and lower the costs of patient care.
